The growth of private markets shows no signs of stopping.  Schroders recently forecast that private markets assets under management (AUM) could reach 30% of all global AUM by 2033.

Blackrock is equally bullish, saying that in 2026, private markets are set “to transform how societies build infrastructure, how businesses finance growth, and how investors achieve diversification in their portfolios.”

Supply and demand factors are driving this growth:

Many companies, particularly in the US, are delisting from public markets or opting to remain private. Schroders, for example, says it is seeing a “significant decrease” in the number of listed companies on US stock markets. Morgan Stanley points out this is partly because the influx of capital into the private markets in recent years has given private companies greater flexibility to stay private longer and “in some cases indefinitely.”

For investors there are a myriad of advantages to gaining exposure to private markets including: diversification; potentially higher returns due to the illiquidity premium; greater stability than public counterparts; and the ability to gain exposure to companies not available in public markets.

It’s also getting easier for retail investors to enter the markets. President Trump is pushing to allow 401(k) retirement plans to access alternative assets and platforms are springing up to let individuals buy “slivers of unicorns”, as Bloomberg puts it.
